MINING IN CHILE: WILL SHIFTING POLITICS HINDER INVESTMENT?

MINING IN CHILE_ WILL SHIFTING POLITICS HINDER INVESTMENT_

Our partner Rony Zimerman is quoted today in the report prepared by Business News Americas on the effects that the political situation in Chile could have for mining investment.

Chile’s political landscape is changing, and the mining industry will not be left out of this debate. The risks posed by changes in regulations related to water, the environment and indigenous rights will surely have an impact on the industry, along with the general concerns over political stability, the change in Constitution and tax reform proposals.

«The constitutional issue is significant because mining is directly and expressly mentioned in the Chilean Constitution and any change in the Constitution directly affects the rules governing mining,» says Rony Zimerman, who leads the Natural Resources and Mining area at Lembeye Abogados. «But Chile’s historically positive reputation carries its weight. The main companies and
exploration firms have experience working in different jurisdictions and are used to changes being made,» he adds.
