Panel: Subsidies fraud post-Covid-19

Daniel Praetorius partner at Lembeye will be participating in the panel on subsidies fraud post-Covid-19 at the International Bar Association’s 26th Annual Transnational Crime Conference taking place in Milan, Italy on 8–10 May 2024.

In the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak, the panel will examine the complex world of subsidy fraud. Due to the Covid-19 health emergency, enterprises received substantial financial support from state authorities and international organizations in the form of subsidies and other forms of relief. This assisted the companies not only overcome the ensuing economic crisis but also the sanitary urgencies. These subsidies were frequently awarded via unusual procurement procedures, simplified procedures, and low controls. Did businesses use these public funds responsibly? Has the number of fraud and corruption investigations increased as a result of regulatory bodies conducting audits following the global crisis? Together with addressing new trends, lessons learned, and tactics to stop fraudulent activities, this panel will analyse the complexities of this subject.
